JAKE

“Where the fuck is Emma?”

I don’t mean to shout, but it comes out explosively. Charlie’s eyes widen, and he stands, unsteadily, to calm me. But there’s no calming me. I’ve already got fire burning through my veins, and I’m ready to kill someone. I’ve checked every room in the cabin, and she’s gone.

She could at least give me an idea of why she’s suddenly changed her mind after that kiss.

The kiss that made me realise I can’t be happy without her.

I don’t care if it’s irrational. There’s some kind of undeniable pull between us, and I just know I’ll never smile again if Emma’s not around. She can’t leave.

Not for the second time.

My phone pings, snapping me out of my rage for just a moment. “So, what time do you want to pick up the new uniforms?”

Sarah, the team manager. Like I could give a damn about the damn uniforms right now. But I blank that message, looking instead to the one that came before it. She’s been waiting for us to turn in our old kit for weeks, and I’ve finally had the guys bundle all their jerseys into the corner so that I can hand them over.

Jesus Christ, if Emma read that first message …

Of course, she did. Why else would she have bolted?

Practically snarling, I grab my keys from a sideboard where I dropped them earlier and kick the door aside, crunching through the snow to my bike. If this is just a misunderstanding, then I’ve gotta find Emma and fix it before it’s too late.

My muscles flex as I haul a leg up and over the frame of my Honda. Kicking my bike into gear, I tear away from the cabins, heading straight for the path that leads to Emma’s retreat.

The engine roars as I bomb it past another bunch of cabins, the local Sheriff giving me a pissed-off look from a doorway as I move past him in a blur, but he doesn’t bother to try and stop me.

Not that I would stop anyway.

Not as long as there’s a chance that Emma’s about to walk out of my life.

The dirt bike kicks up soil and snow as I approach the peak of the hill, before descending down without losing any momentum. At this speed, I’ll be toast if I skid out, but I don’t even give a shit.

I take a sharp corner, kicking up more mud and debris, before finally pulling the world’s longest stoppie into the Curver Mountain Retreat, where a blonde girl is halfway through the door to one of the cabins. “Wait!” I yell. It ain’t Emma, but she’s got to know where she’s gone. This is the Love’s retreat after all.

“Can I help you?” says the blonde, barely stepping back out of the door. Granted, I must look pretty deranged right now. “We’re not going to be open for a few weeks at best.”

“Not a guest,” I blurt out. “I need to see Emma.”

A scowl darkens the girl’s face and she steps back outside.
